Navagrha Mantras with Meanings


Surya (Sun) Mantra




जपाकुसुम संकाशं काश्यपेयं महदद्युतिम् I 


तमोरिंसर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोSस्मि दिवाकरम् II १ II 


“Japaa Kusumasankasham Kasyapeyam Maha Dhyuthim


Thamorim Sarvapaapghnam Pranatosmi Divakaram”


Meaning:


I bow down to the sun who is red like the flower of Hibiscus, who is the son of Kasyapa, who is the enemy of darkness, who destroys all sins and who has a splendid radiance.


Chandra (Moon) Mantra




दधिशंखतुषाराभं क्षीरोदार्णव संभवम् I 


नमामि शशिनं सोमं शंभोर्मुकुट भूषणम् II २ II 


“Dadhi Shankha tushaa-raabham Khseero Darnava Sambhavam


Namaami Shashinam Somam Shambhor Mukuta Bhooshanam”


Meaning:


I offer my salutation to Lord Soma who is white in color like snow, yogurt and icebergs, who adorns the head of Lord Shiva and who rose from the Ksheasagar.


Mangal (Mars) Mantra




धरणीगर्भ संभूतं विद्युत्कांति समप्रभम् I 


कुमारं शक्तिहस्तं तं मंगलं प्रणाम्यहम् II ३ II 


“Dharanee garbha sambhootam, Vidyut Kaanti Sama-prabham


Kumaram Shakti Hastam cha, Tham Mangalaam Pranamamyamaham”


Meaning:


I pray to Lord Mangal who shines like lightning, who is born of the Earth, who holds a weapon named Shakti in his hand and who is called Swami Kumara.


Budha (Mercury) Mantra




प्रियंगुकलिकाश्यामं रुपेणाप्रतिमं बुधम् I 


सौम्यं सौम्यगुणोपेतं तं बुधं प्रणमाम्यहम् II ४ II 


“Priyangukalika Shyaamam, RoopenaaPratimam Budham


Soumyam Soumya Guno Petham Tam Budham Pranamamyamham”


Meaning:


I offer salutations to Budha who has an incomparable beauty, who is very wise, the one who is the son of Soma and the one who possesses charming and noble characteristics.


Guru (Jupiter) Mantra




देवानांच ऋषीनांच गुरुं कांचन सन्निभम् I 


बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम् II ५ II


“Deva-naam cha Rishi Naam cha Gurum kaanchana sannibham,


Buddhi Bhootam Trilokesham Tam Namaami Brihaspatim”


Meaning:


I bow down to Lord Guru, the preceptor of all gods, rishis and saints, the one who is the form of ultimate wisdom, the one who is the God of all the three worlds and the one who is like gold.


Shukra (Venus) Mantra

सर्वशास्त्र प्रवक्तारं भार्गवं प्रणमाम्यहम् II ६ II 

“HimaKundha Mrina-laabham Daitya-naam Paramam Gurum

Sarva Shastra Pravaktaaram Bhargavam Pranamaamyamham”

Meaning:

I bow down to the son of Bhagu, the Shukra who is the spiritual master of asuras, the greatest teacher of all the learning, the one who shines like snow and jasmine.

Shani (Saturn) Mantra

नीलांजन समाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम् I 
छायामार्तंड संभूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम् II ७ II 

“Neelanjanasamaabhasam Ravi Putram Yamaagrajam

Chaaya Marthanda Sambhootam Tam Namaami Shanaiswaram”

Meaning:

I offer prayers to Lord Shani whose complexion is dark blue, the one who is the elder brother of the God of Death (Yama), the one who is born of Chaya and the one who is the son of the Sun.

Simhika Garbha Sambhootam Tam Rahum Pranamaamyaham”

Meaning:

I offer salutations to Rahu, the one with a half-body, the one who has exceptional strength, the one who is born of Simhika and the one who is the eclipse of the sun and the moon.

पलाशपुष्पसंकाशं तारकाग्रह मस्तकम् I 
रौद्रंरौद्रात्मकं घोरं तं केतुं प्रणमाम्यहम् II ९ II 

“Palaasha Pushpa Sankaasham Tarakaa Graha Mastakam

Roudram Roudraa-tmakam Ghoram Tam Ketum Pranamaamyaham”

Meaning:

I pray to Ketu, whose appearance resembles that of flower Palaasha, who is the head of all stars and planets. Lord Ketu is violet and fierce.
